Nobody Asked It To

Nobody Asked It To is a night-time open air photography exhibition at the Morte Point peninsula in north west coast of Devon. On show for one evening only, guests will see a set of floodlit images and a short film celebrating the local nature under the night sky. To find out more about this unusual exhibition, we spoke to the photographer behind the exhibition Joshua Day…

Outdoor Photography: How many images will there be in the exhibition?

Joshua Day: The exhibition will feature 15 photographs, all inspired by what nature on the north Devon coast provides for human wellbeing. They’ll also be a short film exploring human relationships with nature.

OP: How will the images be printed?

JD: The images will be printed on lustre paper and displayed in white scoop wooden frames. Each print will be supported by a wooden easel. As the exhibition is open to the public at night, each image will be individually lit. The accompanying film will be projected onto a large screen on the edge of the exhibition area.

OP: Are the images curated in any particular sequence?

JD: All the images follow the same theme but explore individual services, such as water management, disease control and spiritual enrichment, that nature provides our health and happiness. The pictures will be set out in a circle, just outside a communal lit area from which the audience will approach each image standing alone in the dark.

OP: Why did you decide to put this exhibition on?

JD: Working as a National Trust ranger for the north Devon coast and countryside I’m passionate about nature, but particularly the benefits it has for our wellbeing. I’ve always heard about the benefits of the oceans, ice caps and rainforests but never how our local habitats support our everyday needs. This inspired me to use photography to explore my home, a place I’m more than familiar with and grew up in, but through a totally different mindset. With the images being displayed in the dark on the wilds of Morte Point, the audience’s attention will encourage them to ask: ‘what does nature do for me?’
