The sonic border

In OP217, our May issue (out now), we review Richard Misrach and Guillermo Galindo’s Border Cantos, a moving book that explores the contentious subject of the rebuilding of the USA and Mexico border through photographs and music.

While Misrach presents compelling imagery of the wall – and its surrounding landscape – Galindo creates musical instruments from the detritus found in and around the area. He says, ‘My goal is not to obtain the perfect or most beautiful sound, but to allow the materials to sing in their own voices. The instruments…are meant to enable the invisable victims of immigration to speak through their personal belongings.’

Here are a few videos from the project we found particularly interesting.
