Manchester-based photographer Andrew Brooks has won the inaugural GM Arts Prize with a landscape image taken in the Peak District. The large format photograph, entitled ‘Field Studies – Odin’s Gully’, is one of a series of images taken over four seasons in a beauty spot less than an hour’s drive from Manchester.
‘I’ve been returning to this same spot many times over the last year and recording the changing seasons in vivid detail,’ said Andrew. ‘This image was captured just after sunrise on a late summer’s day.’
Launched in March by the Greater Manchester Chamber, the Arts Prize received more than 220 entries from professional and semi-professional artists, in the form of photographs, drawings, digital prints, solar etchings, sculptures and mixed media.
Kwong Lee, director of Manchester’s Castlefield Gallery, who was on the judging panel, said: ‘The four judges were unanimous in selecting Andrew Brooks’ composite photograph as the winner of the GM Arts Prize 2016. We think “Field Studies – Odin’s Gully” has a sublime quality, which made us look at it again and again.’
