Landscape professional and YouTube star Nigel Danson has worked in exotic locations such as Iceland and Antarctica, but he believes photographing locally reaps the most rewards.

Currently based in Cheshire, within easy reach of the western side of the Peak District, he has made numerous visits to locations around the national park in recent years; a selection of his resulting photographs are brought together in his new book, ‘Close to Calm’.

In OP 322 Graeme Green chats to Nigel about appreciating what’s in our backyards, his approach to photography and how a car accident made him change course in life.

‘Like many,’ he writes in the book’s introduction, ‘I assumed that the best images came from the most dramatic places, towering mountains, remote forests, and remote coastlines. But over time I realised I had been overlooking something just as rewarding: the landscapes right outside my door. Photographing close to home has not only improved my skills, but it has also brought a sense of calm and connection.’
