Kent-based Robert Canis has been photographing his local Elmley Nature Reserve for more than 30 years, building an extensive portfolio of images of its landscapes and wildlife.
A carefully curated selection of these is included in his new book, Elmley: First Light to Last which explores the emotional connection Robert has developed over the decades with this extraordinary place. Presented as a day in the life, from dawn to the dark of night, the book showcases the reserve’s landscape and the myriad birds, mammals and rare insects that call it home.
In his interview with Graeme Green in OP 333, Robert says: ‘[Elmley] never ceases to surprise me. I can’t even hazard a guess at how many tens of thousands of hours I’ve spent there over the years, photographing prolifically. Every time I go, the weather and seasons are so changeable. That’s what drew the painter JMW Turner to north Kent – we have enormous skies. With many photographs, I have minimal foreground but show these enormous sweeping skies and panoramas. Even if I don’t take any photographs, it’s always inspiring.
