An exhibition of Alex Webb’s work goes on show at the Robert Koch Gallery, San Francisco this winter. Opening on 1 December to 25 February, the display is of the Magnum travel, street and documentary photographer’s La Calle series – a collection of images taken by Webb throughout Mexico from 1978 to 2007.

Capturing the true spirit of the country from an unusual perspective, Webb creates lush and deeply-saturated imagery where repetition, shadows, abstract shapes and use of colour feature strongly. His work is often described as visual enigmas that sway between surreal narrative filled scenes and stark reality. Viewing the photographs here it’s clear to see the work’s power to beguile, mystify and in turn inform.

Of the work Webb says: ‘We [as American] come from a culture that in its roots comes out of protestantism, capitalism and individualism…Mexico’s roots lie in Spanish catholicism, the indigenous world and a communal culture. Mexican culture seems to embrace mystery.’ Presenting a rich perception of cultural and social history distinct to Mexico alone, Webb’s pictures will enchant and inspire.

The exhibition coincides with the recent release of the monograph La Calle: Photographs from Mexico, co-published by Aperture and Televisa Foundation.
