Judges' insight

We are delighted to announce that the category winners for Outdoor Photographer of the Year 2016 competition have been revealed.

All eight category winners are showcased here, in our online gallery. You can find the photographers’ longer captions, giving you more background to each picture over on the OPOTY website. You can also see our special OPOTY 2016 video, where the judges share their insights into why the winning images earned recognition:

From more than 17,000 entries the eight successful entrants came from across the globe, including the UK, Netherlands and USA. Each category winner receives a Fjällräven Kånken No.2 Black Edition rucksack and £200 cash.

All the winners and a selection of the very best shortlisted images can be seen in the OPOTY Portfolio II book, available to pre-order now. The book, available in hardback with a dust jacket, features over 200 pages of stunning images showcasing the beauty of our natural world. For more details and to see a list of the photographers feature in the book click here.

The overall winner of the competition – chosen from the adult category winners – will be announced in a very special awards ceremony at The Photography Show on the Live Stage, 18 March, between 1.45-2.30pm. The overall winner will be heading off on assignment to photograph the Fjällräven Polar dogsled expedition across the Scandinavian Arctic in April 2017. An exhibition of the category winners and selected shortlisted entries will also be on display at The Photography Show – more details to follow soon.
