Colourful auroras, dancing nebulae and awe-inspiring views of the Milky Way feature in the shortlist for this year’s ZWO Astronomy Photographer of the Year.
Run by Royal Observatory Greenwich, supported by ZWO and in association with BBC Sky at Night magazine, the competition received almost 4,000 entries from amateur and professional photographers, submitted from 66 countries.

Among those shortlisted is British photographer James McBeath, who captured an eerie representation of last year’s partial solar eclipse on 29 March.
The winners of the competition’s nine categories, two special prizes and the overall winner will be announced on 17 September. The winning images will be displayed in an exhibition at the National Maritime Museum in London from 18 September, alongside a selection of exceptional shortlisted images.

If you can’t wait until September, the 2025 winners are on display at the museum until 3 August. Find out more and book tickets at rmg.co.uk.
